The week in one line
Two of the largest buyers in the market told investors how they intend to spend, and both answers pointed the same direction: cheaper content, measured against margin.
Disney fiscal Q3: margin as policy
Disney reported fiscal third quarter results on August 5, covering the quarter ended June 27. Revenue of $25.25 billion, up 7%, slightly below expectation. Adjusted earnings of $2.06 per share against $1.61 a year earlier, comfortably ahead.
Entertainment streaming, meaning Disney+ and Hulu, grew 11% to $5.53 billion, with a 13% SVOD operating margin and a stated trajectory toward double digit margins for the fiscal year. Disney Experiences posted a record $10 billion quarter. The company raised its fiscal 2026 buyback target to at least $9 billion, funded partly by $1.2 billion from selling half of A+E Global Media to Hearst.
Why it matters for licensing: a public margin commitment changes how content decisions get made. Cost per viewing hour becomes the governing metric, which favours library and catalogue content and squeezes premium acquisitions and mid budget originals.
Toronto sets out the autumn supply
Toronto revealed 64 titles across Gala and Special Presentations, including 32 premieres, for its 51st edition running September 10 to 20. Sian Heder's Being Heumann opens the festival. Anton Corbijn, John Madden and Chris Rock feature in the first wave.
Why it matters for licensing: Toronto's showcase sections are the most complete public inventory of commercially viable independent film heading into the fourth quarter. Depth of supply is why Toronto rarely reproduces the bidding war pricing that Cannes reached earlier this year.
Locarno opens
The 79th Locarno Film Festival opened August 5 and runs to August 15, with Locarno Pro alongside it, including Match Me!, Alliance 4 Development, Open Doors, First Look and Heritage Monday.
Why it matters for licensing: Locarno is a supply and discovery market rather than a demand market. Heritage Monday is one of the few dedicated catalogue events on the festival calendar, and a channel most library owners do not work.
The stipulation nobody will read
The joint stipulation on trial scheduling in the state antitrust action against the Paramount Warner Bros. Discovery transaction was due July 31. The states had proposed April 2027.
Why it matters for licensing: trial timing sets how long the two libraries remain independent competitors. An April 2027 trial leaves the autumn 2026 and first quarter 2027 licensing cycles entirely inside that window.
What we are watching next week
Warner Bros. Discovery reports second quarter results on August 6, with particular attention to its commentary on library and downstream licensing demand.
Locarno Pro attendance figures, which have been growing and would confirm the mid summer slot becoming more central.
